5 Tips That Will Prepare Your HVAC System For The Fall Season

Brian Deckard • September 19, 2018

Is your HVAC system ready for the Fall season? You might want to check it first because we just ended the Summer season. Chances are, your HVAC system just went through hours of being used. You need to make sure that it is well-maintained because, in a few months, winter will start. Your HVAC system will be used extensively once more.

There is no time to grieve the fact that summer is over. Now is the time to act so you can be assured that your heating system will function well once the cold winter months come upon us.

The Fall season is the perfect time to do a thorough maintenance check because it is neither too hot or too cold. Although the frequency of rain is rising, the weather is still more pleasant compared to what you will be up against when winter comes. That means you can survive even if your HVAC system requires a lot of repairs.

So what are the 5 things that you need to do in order to prepare your HVAC system during the Autumn season?

Check air filters

This is usually the first thing that you should check. The filter ensures that the quality of air circulating in your home is clean. In the process, it collects all the dirt in the air. Every once in a while, you need to clean or replace it. The more you use your HVAC system, the more frequent changing or cleaning is necessary. A clean filter will also keep the unit from working too hard – making sure that the energy consumption is low.

Look for air leaks and seal them

Go around your house and try to spot drafts – specifically near windows and doors. When there are drafts within the house, it means there is an air leak nearby. If you fail to do something about this, it will make your HVAC unit work harder than it has to. It will cost you more in your energy bill. Make sure your house is airtight by sealing windows and doors. You should also look at the ductwork of the unit itself to ensure there are also no leaks.

See if the alarms and detectors are working

The alarms and detectors are helpful in determining if there are smoke or any carbon monoxide in the air. Both are dangerous and can be hazardous to your health. Make sure you are not compromising your health and that of your family.

Clean the outdoor unit

The Fall season will still allow you to work outside – which means you can clean the outdoor unit. Simply remove all the dirt and debris on and around it. Sometimes, the debris around it compromises the ability of the unit to get quality air. The leaves and dirt may also damage the coils and other parts inside the unit. You should thoroughly check the unit if there are damages. In case there are, you should call a professional to have it fixed immediately.

Set a professional maintenance checkup

If you need to set a maintenance checkup, the Fall season is the perfect time for this. You should get in touch with a reputable HVAC technician near your area and schedule a checkup with them. There are tasks that you can do yourself, but it is still advisable to have a professional look it over at least once a year. These technicians are trained and licensed to go over your unit thoroughly. They can spot damages and other issues that you may have missed.

Consider all of these as you conduct the HVAC maintenance in your home during the Fall season. You do not want to delay this because it might cause problems for you when the colder months come upon you.
