Different Ways HVAC Maintenance Can Improve Your Indoor Air

How can your HVAC maintenance efforts improve the quality of air in your home?

If you think that any respiratory problem that your family is suffering from is because of what they encounter outside, you may be wrong. Sometimes, people get sick because of the quality of the air inside their homes.

In fact, it is believed that indoor air may be more potent than outdoor air. And since people are spending more time indoors, especially during certain seasons, their health is more at risk.

Fortunately, this is a problem that you can easily solve. You can improve the quality of air that circulates your home. You just have to make sure that your HVAC maintenance is up-to-date.

How HVAC maintenance gives you high-quality indoor air

Indoor air is more of a health risk because it does not really have anywhere else to go. When you are outdoors, any bad air can be blown away. This is why it is more important to focus on the quality of air that circulates around your home.

But if you make sure that your HVAC is clean and functioning properly, you can be assured that the air you breathe at home will be clean. But how can this be done?

Clean the air filters as part of regular maintenance

When the air passes through your HVAC system, it is the job of the air filter to clean it. Over time, this filter becomes filled with dirt and other pollutants. As it builds up, there is a danger that the dirt will be carried by air as it passes through the filter. So you need to make sure that the filter is cleaned every now and then. If you have a reusable filter, make sure you clean it. If not, replace it with a new one.

Check that the ventilation system is correct

This does not mean you need to set up a different HVAC system for different areas in your home. But there are places in your house that are more prone to moisture. A perfect example is your bathroom. Some, like your kitchen, will require special ventilation because of the smoke and odor that is released while cooking. While there is no need for a different system here, you need to have an exhaust fan installed. That way, it will not compromise the air.

Check combustion equipment

These include stoves, water heaters, and even furnaces. These should be updated and have a ventilation system that works properly. You have to ensure that it always works so it will not cause harm to the quality of air around your home.

These are only a few of the things that you can do to ensure that the quality of air in your home will not be compromised.

Different indoor air contaminants

But what exactly are the dangers that you will face indoors? Here are the different air contaminants that can be solved by proper and regular HVAC maintenance.

  • Did you know that we all shed a lot of dead skin cells every day? These accumulate into dust around the house. Not only that, but the fiber in your carpet will also contribute to the accumulation of dust. These can be blocked by your HVAC filters but it has to be cleaned every now and then. Of course, regular cleaning will also help improve the quality of air in your home.
  • Toxic combustion products. An example of this is CO2. These are harmful emissions from gas-powered equipment or appliances like the furnace, heater, etc. You need to make sure these products are used in well-ventilated areas.
  • Radioactive radon gas can come through the soil under your home. Without you knowing it, this can penetrate your home and be inhaled by everyone. This can cause lung cancer. You can research the device that can be used to ensure that the radon will go straight out of your roof instead of circulating your home.
  • Finally, you also have moisture as a threat. This can breed mold and mildew which can trigger allergies. Install an exhaust fan in areas where moisture is bound to build up. That way, it will not cause any respiratory issues.

If these dangers are not addressed, it can cause coughing, headaches, sore throat, dizziness, fatigue, and other respiratory ailments. Just make sure you conduct regular HVAC maintenance and you do not have to worry about these things. If you need to schedule maintenance for your HVAC, make sure to contact us.
